WebTech Wireless is developing an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) that can deliver telematics and location-based services (LBS) as well as safety and security, entertainment, and remote diagnostics, to passenger and commercial vehicles.

Compatible with CAN bus and J1939 interface standards, the GSM-based wireless gateway chip is expected to facilitate telematics and LBS using GPS and a centralized telematics and LBS management system (TLMS) based on WebTech wireless’s quadrant technology.

The GSM-based wireless device includes a dynamically configurable virtual SIM Card, a telematics and LBS virtual client, and event profiles that allow the wireless device to be dynamically configured and reconfigured. The ASIC is planned for production within 24 months, according to WebTech Wireless chief technology officer and co-founder Cameron Fraser. “Fitting this ASIC on automotive manufacturing lines and fully integrating with a passenger vehicle’s electronics will see telematics and LBS become a mainstream fixture in passenger and commercial vehicles worldwide,” he said.
