u-blox maps road to lead-free GPS

Jul 7, 2005 1:13 PM

GPS manufacturer u-blox AG said it will ensure that all of its products and processes comply with European Union environmental legislations at least six months before next July, when the new rules come into effect.

The EU’s 'Restrictions On Hazardous Substances' (RoHS) directive and the directive on 'Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment' (WEEE) target the use and disposal of six environmentally hazardous materials, including lead. Products will have to be redesigned to remove those materials, and producers will be responsible for recycling equipment.

All u-blox products will be made lead-free while ensuring backward compatibility, the company said. Its production partner, Flextronics (www.flextronics.com), is currently manufacturing lead-fee products.
