Oki Electric has developed liquid crystal display (LCD) controller chips that integrate video decoders compatible with NTSC, PAL and SECAM video standards. The chips target small and mid-size LCD monitors used in automotive applications.

Samples of the ML86V8207 for small LCD monitors and ML86V8209 for mid-size monitors are available, according to Oki. Volume shipments of the ML86V8209 are planned for October. Volume shipments of the ML86V8207 are expected to begin in December.

The ML86V8207 was developed for small QVGA-VGA LCD monitors while the ML86V8209 was developed for WVGA-XGA mid-size LCD monitors. Both single-chip devices include the video decoder, scaler, on-screen display (OSD) and LCD controller. The video decoder supports the three worldwide video signal standards and is compliant with component video signal D2, offering synchronous stability for non-standard video signals that occur in bad signal environments, such as in weak electric fields. Both devices are ISO/TS16949 compliant.

The LCD controller includes functions for scaling and timing control (T-CON), in addition to a line overlay function and I/P converting, which enables high quality video on mid and small size LCD monitors without the need for an external large-capacity memory. With these functions in the LCD controllers, users can connect a system directly to various types of LCD panels, the company said.

The ML86V8209 includes an SDRAM interface to enable the picture-in-picture function for digital and analog video signals, plus a line overlay function for displaying up to XGA resolution. Applications include synthesis display of digital videos for car navigation systems, analog video for automotive surveillance cameras, and display guidance on backup monitors. OKI plans to add a noise reduction function and an LVDS video signal interface.
