NAVTEQ demonstrates vehicle infrastructure integration (VII) technology

Nov 10, 2005 12:34 PM

At the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress this week, NAVTEQ is collaborating with BMW, Motorola and Volkswagen of America to demonstrate vehicle infrastructure integration (VII) technologies -- the wireless communication of safety, mobility and commercial information among vehicles and the transportation infrastructure.

In the demo, prototype vehicles will broadcast vehicle sensor data to a processing center. After processing, the data will be transmitted for display on VII-enabled navigation systems. “Giving drivers access to real-time information about the road network -- from hazardous road conditions to points of interest (POIs) -- is only useful if it is relevant to a driver’s specific route,” said John MacLeod, NAVTEQ’s executive vice president of global marketing and strategy. Processing and linking this information to the most accurate maps of the road network is essential to the efficacy of VII systems.”

McLeod said the demo takes VII technology beyond communication between the car and the road, highlighting the potential for a more 'personalized' conversation between the driver, the car and the roadway.
