Microchip 30V LDOs provide load-dump protection to 43.5V

Apr 10, 2008 4:55 PM

Microchip Technology has introduced two high-voltage linear regulators, the MCP1790 and MCP1791 (MCP179X). Targeting automotive as well as industrial applications, the devices offer a continuous 70 milliamp output, the ability to operate at a continuous input voltage of up to 30V, and load-dump protection up to 43.5V. They also feature low (70 microamp) quiescent current and shutdown current, and ceramic capacitor stability, all of which enable smaller designs at lower costs, according to Mikhail Voroniouk, product marketing engineer with Microchip’s Analog and Interface Products Division.

Voroniouk said the LDOs are well-suited for automotive applications such as instrumentation lighting, power windows and locks, electronic accessory power adapters, and stereo systems, where a device is powered directly from a car’s battery. The built-in load-dump protection feature in the MCP179X LDOs shields the system from voltage transients.

The MCP1790 is available in a 3-pin SOT-223 or DDPAK package for $0.76 and $0.78 each in 10,000-unit quantities, respectively. The MCP1791 is available in a 5-pin SOT-223 or DDPAK package for $0.80 and $0.88 each.
