Laird introduces shark fin antenna assembly

Feb 19, 2009 4:56 PM

Laird Technologies, Inc. has introduced a “shark fin”-style modular antenna assembly for automotive vehicles. The patented antenna offers SDARS, GPS, AMPS, and PCS antenna coverage in one package.

The antenna consists of a 16 mm profile base designed to fit multiple vehicle platforms with various roof curvatures, and a 65 mm shark fin style antenna radome. The base antenna, which houses the SDARS and GPS patch antenna elements, is installed at the factory. The shark fin, installed onto the base module once the vehicle has reached its final destination, houses a combined AMPS and PCS antenna element.

A micro-latching mechanism allows the antenna to fit multiple car curvatures with only one base module. The module features a “0 gap” design after it is mated with the base module on the vehicle roof.
