DENSO shrinks millimeter-wave radar

Sep 11, 2008 9:34 AM

DENSO Corporation (http://www.globaldenso.com/) said it has developed a new millimeter-wave radar that is nearly half the volume and significantly less expensive than the previous model. Pricing was not disclosed.

DENSO millimeter-wave radar technology, which can detect obstacles on the road ahead, is used in pre-crash safety systems that identify an imminent collision to minimize crash damage and in adaptive cruise control systems that maintain vehicle distance. The new millimeter-wave radar will be installed in vehicles sold in Japan and other countries worldwide beginning this month.

To help reduce the size and cost of the new millimeter-wave radar DENSO integrated the transmitting and receiving antenna and the waveguide tube, which connects the antenna and transmitting and receiving device. The firm also used a high-performance signal processing technology to reduce the number of receiving channels in the antenna, which helped reduce the size of the antenna and the transmitting and receiving device.
