Philips Lumileds Lighting Company said its LUXEON automotive LEDs are in use for forward lighting (high beam and low beam) on the Audi R8. The company said its headlamp systems can deliver the flux and luminance required for a legal headlamp beam, and can also meet color and reliability requirements, with a small number of LEDs. The systems are said to exceed the performance of most conventional headlamp bulbs.

Flux improvements were achieved through advances in the semiconductor epitaxial process, and luminance (surface brightness) improvements resulted from the use of Thin Film Flip Chip (TFFC) technology, the company said.
