200 Lumen Light Output

Jul 1, 2005 12:00 PM

Researchers at the German light specialist firm Osram Opto Semiconductors say they have produced the world's strongest white light-emitting diode (LED). The “Ostar Lighting” has a light output of 200 lumen and, therefore, literally outshines filament bulbs and fluorescent tubes.

The researchers achieved the exceptional level of brightness by deflecting outward almost the entire light produced by the semiconductor chip at 700 milliamps. The coating of the chip — a special metallic mirror — and a specially structured chip surface with microprisms deflect the light rays directly upward. The chip gives off blue light, which is then converted into white light by a further yellow coating.
