Dear Electronics Marketer,
It has been a year and a half since we first launched Wards Auto Electronics as a supplement to Power Electronics Technology, RF Design and WARD's AutoWorld at the Convergence Show in October 2004. Our vision was to be a stand alone publication by 2006. Despite a soft auto market, in September of 2005 we became a full-fledged magazine, three months ahead of our original goal!
Along with becoming a stand alone publication, we dropped the Wards from our name and became simply Auto Electronics. Though mostly cosmetic, the new name reflects our evolution from this successful collaboration.
Our circulation was originally developed from the design engineering readers of WARD's AutoWorld, Power Electronics Technology and RF Design who are specifically involved in automotive electronics. Today, Auto Electronics has retained our original roster of loyal readers while growing ever stronger. Auto Electronics has cultivated a highly targeted audience of design engineers who depend on this publication to help them improve the design and understanding of today's integrated automotive systems. One of the reasons that Auto Electronics has been so successful is that it performs a unique task in the automotive industry, as you can see from the editorial lineup below coming in the May issue. Auto Electronics is a tool designed for engineers to learn about developments specifically in their field at a new level of detail. With Ashok Bindra and David Morrison at the helm, it has earned peer-to-peer credibility, as the only automotive electronics publication written by engineers for engineers.
With accountability so important to marketers, Auto Electronics offers advertisers the chance to engage this specific audience with their message. One major advantage of not being a supplement is that we are now able to obtain our own BPA audit.
Thank you for your support. I look forward to partnering with you on behalf of Auto Electronics for many years to come.
Best regards,

Judy Miller

Cover Story: Data Buses/In-Vehicle Networking
Recent Developments in Automotive Networking
While CAN has been a popular data bus and continues to gain momentum in automotive networks, this cover story examines recent developments in LIN, FlexRay, MOST, 1394 and others. This report looks at new applications tapping data communications standards, and investigates network development modeling tools, as OEMs experience pressure to cut design time and cost.
Special Report: Embedded Systems - Right Sizing Embedded Processors
Depending on the vehicle application, embedded systems typically use 32-bit, 16-bit, and 8-bit microcontrollers (MCUs). With their low cost, and small footprint, 8-bit MCUs find use in many systems, but are most popular as the main processor in security systems. The historical pinnacle for embedded performance has been powertrain. However, high-end infotainment systems require both digital signal processor (DSP) and MCU performance beyond the highest performing powertrain units. With growing system complexity, application-specific processors and development tools have become key supplier differentiators. This report explores the changes in the embedded computing and controlling needs in powertrain, infotainment, safety, security and body electronics.
Design Feature 1: Powertrain - Functional Power Solutions for Powertrain
Power semiconductors for today’s automotive powertrain and engine control applications need to manage challenging loads while enduring a harsh environment. These power devices often include some level of signal processing capability and intelligence while operating in energy absorption modes. Careful partitioning of power and signal processing functions, as well as packaging, becomes critical to achieve optimal reliability and performance in these applications. This article shows how state-of-the-art power silicon technology and high performance BiCMOS control functions can deliver new higher power, lower dissipation complex Functional Power solutions for powertrain application.
Design Feature 2: Infotainment
Driving Next-Generation Digital Head Units for Automotive Applications
As new media technologies emerge in home and handheld consumer electronics devices, today’s drivers demand similar user experiences in the car. To stay competitive with in-car media, OEM’s must create flexible and scalable solutions to keep up with the rapidly changing market. Programmable solutions are becoming increasingly important to address these needs, and a software-configurable digital architecture enables the easy introduction of new features and functions, therefore reducing product development time. This article explores a programmable dual-core SoC architecture that offers the scalability of a general purpose processor (GPP) and a DSP on a single chip, thereby enabling reuse of designs across product lines to reduce development cost and time.
